Victoria Cyclists surprise at Canadian National Cycling Championships.

June 20th, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 20, 2013, St. George, Quebec:

Two relatively unknown cyclists from Victoria BC surprised the entire Canadian cycling world today by besting some of Canada’s top Elite and Professional Cyclists at the 2013 Canadian National Cycling Championships in St. Georges, Quebec.

In the women’s Elite Race, 23 year old Tripleshot Racing Club rider, Anika Todd, missed taking the Gold Medal in the Women’s Elite Time Trial by only 20 seconds in her first ever National Cycling Championships.  The Uvic Grad covered the 27 km distance in 40 min 40 sec,  which was not fast enough to beat Joelle Numainville of the Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Pro Cycling Team.  However, she was able to hold off Professional Cyclist and Olympic Bronze medalist, Jasmine Glaesser by 19 seconds to take the silver medal.   Anika credits the support of the Tripleshot Cycling Club and coach Peter Lawless for her impressive performance.

In the men’s race, Russ Hay’s/Accent Inns racer Curtis Dearden (Age 31) won the men’s 39 km Time Trial race in a blistering time of 48 min 24 sec (Average speed of 48.75 km/hr) , beating Professional World Tour Cyclist Christian Meier from Orica/Green Edge by 13 seconds.  Curtis currently works as a mechanic at the Russ Hay’s Bike Shop in Victoria and races part time for the Russ Hay’s Accent Inns Team, with his primary focus on his time trial racing for this year’s season.   He credits his win to the inspiration of having his wife Amy and their new baby daughter, Ellie there to cheer him on.

Other notable results from Victoria cyclists are:

10th Place – Adam DeVos (Trek Red Truck p/b Mosaic Homes)

12th Place – Nic Hamilton (Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team)

26th Place – Dylan Cunningham (Independent)

43rd Place – Luke Koolman (Russ Hay’s Accent Inns)
