The Victoria Tech Team started to put the wheels in motion at a Viatec Christmas. The results; a cycling team of 22 Victoria BC tech professionals, and months of training for the 260km ride from Vancouver to Seattle in support of the BC Cancer Foundation’s 2010 Ride to Conquer Cancer.
The Victoria Tech Team Riders championed by team Captain Tony Melli is made up of a wide range of members from the local tech community, including software entrepreneurs, business owners, tech investors, government agents, educators, consultants and IT experts.
The one thing in common with each of the team members is that they all have been moved by having family or friends stricken by Cancer and all are keen to use their personal creativity to help in the fight against the vicious disease.
A recent visit to Victoria’s Deeley Research Centre and BC Cancer Agency Vancouver Island Centre really put things in perspective. Said team member Steve Harris, “After months of training it was incredibly inspiring to tour the Cancer Research Centre and see some of the practical results of these kinds of efforts. All of us were blown away to find out about the world leading research and development that is being done right here in Victoria.”
Fundraisers organized by team members included a house concert with John Mann of Spirit of the West, a Lamb Roast, a Silent Auction, an Educational Seminar, Social Media and a call to the Victoria hotel chain Accent Inns. “Supporting the BC Cancer foundation and the work they do in research and care of cancer patients is so very important”, John Espley, Business Development Manager for the BC Hotel chain. “We are thrilled to be supporting such dedicated individuals in their efforts.” Accent Inns is assisting with accommodations at our Vancouver Airport Hotel.
