SALMON KINGS DOWN ACES IN FINALE

Victoria’s Matt Siddall records three points to secure a 5-1 victory over Alaska.

Victoria, BCIn a Sunday afternoon matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met in the finale of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria’s Leland Irving got the start in net while Alaska countered with Frank Doyle.

Alaska opened the scoring at the 5:55 mark while on the power play when Nick Mazzolini redirected a slap-pass from Scott Burt up and over the right pad of Irving. The goal was Mazzolini’s 19th of the season. The Salmon Kings responded with a power play goal at the 8:56 mark on Matt Siddall’s 16th marker of the campaign. Gary Gladue released a point shot that was initially stopped by the right pad of Doyle with Siddall lifting the rebound over the Aces goaltender. The period ended with the game deadlocked at 1-1.

Victoria took the lead on a five-on-three advantage at the 14:20 mark of the middle frame on a tic-tac-toe passing play. Chad Painchaud passed the puck to Olivier Filion on the goal line who quickly fed Wes Goldie across the crease at the left side of the net. The Salmon Kings’ captain beat Doyle with a quick wrist shot for his ECHL- leading 35th goal of the season. Victoria led 2-1 through 40 minutes of play.

Victoria extended their lead to 3-1 at the 3:34 mark on Randall Gelech’s 15th goal of the season. The Salmon Kings’ forward buried the puck into the open net after Mike Hamilton poked the puck free from the Aces’ netminder. Victoria would take a 4-1 advantage at the 7:01 mark when Painchaud pounced on a rebound and fired a backhand shot past Doyle. The goal was Painchaud’s 22nd of the campaign. The Salmon Kings rounded out the scoring at the 8:04 mark while on the power play. Jimmy Sharrow received a pass from Brandon Roach and released a slap-shot from the top of the left face-off circle that beat Doyle between the legs. For Sharrow it was his 10th goal of the season. Victoria went 3/7 = 42.9% on the power play while Alaska was 1/4 = 25.0%. The Aces outshot the Salmon Kings 36-34.

The Salmon Kings head out on an eight game road trip starting with a three-game set in Utah on Wednesday, February 17th, Friday, February 19th, and Saturday, February 20th. Victoria returns home to host the National Conference leading Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday, March 10th, Friday, March 12th, and Saturday, March 13th.
